I try to buy organic produce whenever possible. There are many reasons to buy organic, and keeping chemical pesticides out of our bodies is one. For that reason there are some items that I always make sure are grown organically. Strawberries, apples, spinach, celery, and cherries are on this list, as well as grapes. I also really prefer to buy meat and poultry raised without the use of antibiotics. For produce, take a look at the “Dirty Dozen” that the webiste EWG says you should avoid if grown conventionally (and conversely, they also publish the “Clean Fifteen“, which they report are least likely to contain pesticide residue). Of course it can be difficult, and expensive, to buy organic all the time, and when eating out at restaurants one almost never has the luxury, but having the knowledge to make an informed decision is a great start to a healthier diet.
